Health Risk Prediction

Maternal & Pediatric Health Analytics

Combining care access analysis, geospatial intelligence, and population risk modeling to help organizations understand where maternal and pediatric health needs are greatest.

From care access to health risk prediction

Maternal and pediatric health outcomes are among the most important indicators of a population’s overall health. These outcomes are shaped by access to care, provider availability, distance to services, socio-economic conditions, chronic disease, environmental exposure, and structural risk factors.

Our work combines care desert analysis with risk modeling so organizations can identify not only where access is limited, but where access gaps intersect with higher-risk populations.

Care Access

Analyze distance to maternal, women’s health, pediatric, and related care resources across communities and service areas.

Population Risk

Combine access gaps with socio-economic, demographic, environmental, and health risk factors that influence outcomes.

Planning Support

Support facility planning, outreach, intervention targeting, workforce distribution, and risk-informed resource allocation.

Women's Health Care Deserts

Women’s Health Care Deserts

National-scale analyses identifying women’s health care deserts based on distance to care, provider distribution, and access to relevant services.

Pediatric Care Desert Analysis

As part of our Maryland Hospital Association work, we conducted pediatric care desert analysis to identify areas with limited access to pediatric services.

Maryland Hospital Association Care Desert Pilot

In collaboration with the Maryland Hospital Association, we conducted a statewide analysis to identify care deserts across multiple service lines, including women’s health services, pediatric care, and primary care access.

Care deserts were defined using distance-to-care methodologies combined with population distribution and health system catchment areas.

Underserved Populations

Identify underserved populations within health system service areas.

Geographic Barriers

Understand where travel burden may limit maternal and pediatric care access.

Intervention Planning

Prioritize locations for new facilities, outreach, or intervention programs.

Risk Overlay

Overlay access gaps with population risk characteristics and local context.

From Access to Risk: Maternal & Infant Health

Access to care is only one part of the equation. Maternal and infant health outcomes are also driven by underlying social, environmental, demographic, and health factors.

Our maternal and infant mortality risk modeling can incorporate variables such as income, insurance access, prenatal care access, chronic disease prevalence, environmental exposure, built environment, and demographic disparities.

By combining risk modeling with care desert analysis, organizations can identify where limited access intersects with higher-risk populations.

What This Enables

Facility Planning

Identify optimal locations for new maternal or pediatric care facilities.

Targeted Intervention

Prioritize outreach and interventions for higher-risk populations.

Disparity Analysis

Understand how access, outcomes, geography, and socio-economic conditions intersect.

Resource Allocation

Support workforce planning, resource distribution, and proactive health system strategy.

Looking Ahead

We are continuing to expand maternal and pediatric health analytics by integrating care desert analysis, maternal and infant outcome risk indices, social factor intelligence, environmental exposure, and climate-related risk factors.

These capabilities are being incorporated into our broader analytics platform to support dynamic, question-driven analysis — enabling organizations to move from static dashboards to actionable insights.

Example questions

  • Where should new maternal or pediatric care facilities be placed?
  • Which populations are most at risk and why?
  • How does access to care intersect with underlying risk factors?
